Josh Shapiro Running for Attorney General Again
Democrat Josh Shapiro, the state attorney general who built his political make past taking on some of the most powerful institutions in Pennsylvania, plans to announce Wednesday a run for governor in 2022.

What to know about Josh Shapiro

Shapiro has aggressively taken on consumer-oriented issues that have a widespread effect on voters across the state. His part ofttimes issues alerts on possible scams, especially those targeting seniors, and Shapiro has not shied from taking on politicians, government agencies and healthcare companies.
In June 2019, Shapiro and Wolf announced that wellness system giants UPMC and Highmark had agreed to a 10-year bargain catastrophe their bitter dispute over UPMC providing care to Highmark patients, an issue particularly important to western Pennsylvania residents.
Shapiro filed a petition for UPMC to change a consent decree after negotiations between it and Highmark stalled. A state court eventually ruled that the state could non alter the decrees, simply "rigorous negotiations" involving Shapiro and the ii systems were already underway leading to the 10-year agreement.
At the time, Shapiro described the deal in a statement as a "historic settlement" that "restores fairness and admission to affordable care for the people of western Pennsylvania."
A year ago, Shapiro joined with other Democratic attorneys general to wage a legal fight against proposed changes to the U.S. Postal Service right before the presidential election. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, appointed past one-time President Donald Trump, ultimately said he would postpone the changes.

Inbound the governor's race
Contempo reforms appear by DeJoy have again riled objections, with Shapiro and 20 attorneys general filing a formal complaint with the Postal Regulatory Commission to block them.
"Postmaster General DeJoy's plan to transform the Mail service will impact mail service commitment for everyone in Pennsylvania and across the nation," Shapiro said in a statement. "This plan is being enacted without any meaningful oversight and review, and the Postal Regulatory Commission, states, experts, and the public deserve to have their voices heard."
Shapiro has also taken on the proliferation of so-called "ghost guns," weapons that come up unassembled in kits and which are untraceable.
Before this year, he struck a deal with Eagle Artillery Production, the largest gun bear witness promoter in Pennsylvania, to end the sale of the gun kits at its shows, and he has continued to support the Biden administration's work to finish the auction of them.
Rendell expects Shapiro to win, specially if Republicans put up a pro-Trump candidate who has to defend the former president'southward unsubstantiated claims of a fraudulent election. That strategy will be a sure loser in the suburbs where both parties need to win, he said.
"The next governor'due south race is crucial because, if Republicans win the governor'southward seat, they are going to do stupid things...regressive things that are bad for the state," Rendell said.
Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf, whose 2nd term is nearing its end, has been "the biggest defender" against bills passed by the Republican-controlled Legislature, Rendell said.
Wolf has vetoed bills that banned abortions, expanded gun laws, ignored the dangers of climatic change, a pandemic and more.
Democrats fearfulness if a Republican governor is elected and the GOP has a supermajority, Pennsylvania will look like a scarlet state instead of the purple state it has been.
Republicans who take entered the race so far are taking aim at Wolf's pandemic policies, running in part on the personal freedom to choose whether to become a vaccine and wear a mask. They say Wolf's approach of prioritizing public wellness has hurt the Pennsylvania economic system, and they believe Republican leadership can fix information technology.
Rendell said running against Wolf is a fault because he'southward not on the ballot.
Republicans say they will run against Shapiro, who has been in line with Wolf on most large issues.
When a state House committee pushed through iii anti-abortion bills during the last session, Shapiro called the Republican proposals an "assail" on the right to reproductive health intendance.
And when the U.Southward. Supreme Court on Sept. 1 allowed a Texas law to proceed, blocking abortions at six weeks gestation before many women know they're pregnant, Shapiro warned the abortion fight was simply beginning. He said it would go a bigger fight in the states and that he would always defend the right to cull.
"The only thing standing in the way of a Texas-style ballgame ban is our Democratic Governor and his veto pen," he said. "We must keep it that style."
